Joseph MacDonald was born in 26 February 1739. In 1760 he wrote the manuscript ‘A Compleat Theory of the Scots Highland Bagpipe’. He was a piper himself, and as far as we know he was the first piper to record in notation the music we now call piobaireachd.

This edition by Dr Roderick Cannon examines in detail the contents of the original book and makes learned suggestions about the contents, the likely playing styles and what this tells us about the development of piping in those years. It's a fascinating read, and includes a copy of MacDonald's original manuscript.
